The McDonald Center for Student Well-Being not only provides opportunities for students to learn and practice well-being skills but we support campus community members in building a culture that promotes student flourishing. Rethinking Higher Education’s Purpose: How can the college experience promote wellbeing, both on campus and over a lifetime?

This webinar explores new initiatives to design (and redesign) our institutions to better serve the lifelong health and fulfillment of students. A panel discussion explores how wellbeing factors into some of the most important questions in higher education today. The webinar is moderated by Marjorie Malpiede, editor-in-chief of LearningWell magazine. Panelists include Randall Bass, PhD, vice president for Strategic Education Initiatives & professor of English at Georgetown University; Joslyn Johnson, PhD, assistant dean of Student Development & Career Initiatives at the University of Michigan; Daniel Porterfield, PhD, president and CEO of the Aspen Institute; and Eric Wood, PhD, director of Counseling and Mental Health at Texas Christian University.

A world-renowned scholar of Tibetan Buddhism and global leader on the topic of flourishing, Dr. Germano has founded global networks on flourishing and is currently researching contemplative practices at the University of Virginia.

Student Flourishing, Contemplation and the Future of Universities

During this session, Dr. Germano addresses student suffering, flourishing and contemplation, offering actionable practices that make flourishing attainable. Additionally, this session explores ways Universities can engage in systemic transformation to positively impact student mental health and holistic flourishing. Contemplation as a Generative Capacity: Understanding and Designing Contemplative Practices

During this session, Dr. Germano explores a new model for scholarship on contemplative practices in religious traditions, including a design process supporting the intentional creation of new contemplative practices.
