September is National Recovery Month

Author: Mara Trionfero

September is National Recovery Month, an annual observance celebrated every September since 1989. In September, and throughout the year, Recovery Month spreads the message that: Behavioral health is essential to health, Prevention works, Treatment is effective, and People recover.  Mental and/or substance use disorders affect people of all ethnicities, ages, genders, geographic regions, and socioeconomic levels. Help is available. Individuals can get better, both physically and emotionally, with the support of a welcoming community. As the Notre Dame Family, we celebrate those in recovery and encourage those who are struggling to seek help through the many resources available.  AA meetings are held several times throughout the week on campus (go to http://www.michianasober.org/ for the full local schedule), and the University Counseling Center can help students in need of treatment find the best options.  For faculty and staff, check out Human Resources’ Employee Assistance Program or make an appointment at the Notre Dame Wellness Center.  Refer to the Recovery Month website, https://recoverymonth.gov/about or contact us in the McDonald Center for Student Well-Being for additional information on the initiative.
